MSK Pain Problem - Prolapsed/ Herniated Disc

The human spine is formed by interconnected vertebrae, and between each vertebra, there is a disc-shaped soft tissue called an "intervertebral disc" that aids in connecting them. These discs allow for partial movement of the spine, assist in maintaining stability, and provide shock absorption. When these discs are subjected to excessive abnormal external pressure, it can lead to the outer fibrous ring rupturing, resulting in a protrusion known as a herniated disc.

Symptoms:

While most herniated discs commonly occur in the lower back, they can also manifest in the neck. Signs and symptoms depend on the location of the herniated disc and whether it's compressing a nerve. Symptoms of a herniated disc usually affect only one side of the body.

  1. Arm or leg pain: In the case of a lower back herniated disc, besides experiencing lower back pain, you may feel pain in the buttocks, thigh, and calf. You might also experience foot pain. For a neck herniated disc, you typically feel pain in the shoulders and arms.

  2. Sharp or burning pain: When you cough, sneeze, or change position, this pain quickly radiates to the arms or legs. The pain can be described as sharp or burning.

  3. Numbness or tingling sensation: Patients with a herniated disc often experience radiating numbness or tingling sensations along the affected nerve's distribution.

  4. Muscle weakness: Muscles supplied by the compressed nerve often experience weakness. This might make you more prone to stumbling or affect your ability to lift or hold objects.

MSK Treatment Methods:

  1. Instrument-assisted therapies to alleviate pain

  2. Gradually increasing spinal mobility exercises

  3. Acupuncture for relieving muscle tension

  4. Manual therapies to aid in restoring the spine's original range of motion

  5. Nerve-gliding exercises to help reduce nerve-related symptoms
