Tennis elbow is an injury to the soft tissue fibers where the extensor tendon group of the forearm attaches to the outer part of the humerus, often due to repetitive use. Most often, it is caused by overuse.
When the extensor tendons of the forearm are overloaded, the tendons can undergo prolonged stretching, leading to fatigue or even tearing. Without adequate rest and treatment, this can progress into chronic tendinitis.
Symptoms:
Intense pain on the outer side of the elbow
Exacerbated pain during activities involving arm movements such as twisting, wrist extension, and gripping
Tenderness at the wrist, outer elbow joint, and ligament positions; pain may also radiate to the upper and lower arm, causing difficulty in lifting
If left untreated, it can result in tendon degeneration, further tearing, and chronic pain.
MSK Treatment Methods:
Gradual increment of activities involving extensor tendon movement
Treatment of tender points in the forearm
Stretching of the extensor group
Instrument-assisted treatments to alleviate pain
Examination of the range of motion and mechanical issues in the elbow
